Our Mission

At Light Handle Press, we are dedicated to shining a light on surgery for everyone.

For Patients

Preparing your mind and body for surgery

Most surgical complications don’t begin in the operating room—they begin weeks earlier.

Prehabilitation flips the traditional model of care on its head by preparing patients before surgery, not just reacting afterward. Stronger patients heal faster, tolerate stress better, and experience fewer complications. The worldwide evidence is clear, and prehabilitation is endorsed by many surgical organizations in the US and UK—but implementation is often the missing piece. There is simply not enough Prehab Clinics to meet the needs of the people who desperately need it.

That’s why I wrote The Prehab Advantage: A Surgeons Guide to Preparing You for Safer Surgery and Faster Recovery.

As a Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgeon, I’ve been teaching prehabilitation principles to my patients undergoing major surgery for years. When it came time to open a Prehabilitation Clinic at my center, the pamphlet I starting writing for my own patients turned into a book that can be used by any patient worldwide.

This book is a compact, practical, evidence-based guide written directly to patients:

• What prehabilitation actually is, how it helps make you stronger for surgery, and the worldwide evidence for its effectiveness

• A specific protein-rich diet to aid muscle fitness, immune function, and post operative healing

• A daily exercise routine directed at seniors focusing on endurance, strength, and flexibility with diagrams to illustrate every step

• A walk through “A Day in the Operating Room” with a focus on reducing anxiety, increasing confidence, and eliminating any surprises from the experience

• A practical guide to quitting bad habits such as smoking and heavy drinking leading up to surgery to reduce complications

Whether you’re a surgeon, an anesthesiologist, a hospital administrator, an insurer, or a patient preparing for surgery, the goal is the same – to get through surgery smoothly and without complications. For seniors, independence and often life depends on it.

For SURGEONS

Most surgical complications don’t begin in the operating room—they begin weeks earlier.

Frailty, malnutrition, deconditioning, smoking, alcohol use, and anxiety all increase operative risk. Prehabilitation addresses these factors, and the evidence supporting it continues to grow. The problem is not belief—it’s implementation.

There are simply not enough prehabilitation programs to meet patient demand.

I wrote The Prehab Advantage: A Surgeon’s Guide to Preparing You for Safer Surgery and Faster Recovery to help close that gap.

What began as a patient pamphlet in my own hepatobiliary and pancreatic practice evolved into a concise, evidence-based guide that prepares patients for surgery in a structured, practical way—without adding clinic burden.

The book covers:

• The global evidence base for prehabilitation

• Nutritional strategies to reduce sarcopenia and postoperative complications

• Simple, age-appropriate exercise programs patients can follow independently

• A clear walk-through of the perioperative experience to reduce anxiety

• Practical approaches to smoking and alcohol cessation before surgery

This is not a substitute for a formal prehab clinic—but it is a way to ensure patients are better prepared when such resources are unavailable.

FOR ADMINISTRATORS/INSURERS

Most surgical complications don’t originate in the operating room—they develop weeks earlier, driven by frailty, malnutrition, deconditioning, and modifiable risk factors.

Prehabilitation addresses these issues upstream. The global literature consistently shows reduced complications, shorter length of stay, and improved functional recovery—yet implementation remains inconsistent due to resource and access constraints.

To help bridge that gap, I wrote The Prehab Advantage: A Surgeon’s Guide to Preparing You for Safer Surgery and Faster Recovery.

Based on years of clinical experience as a hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon, this book translates evidence-based prehabilitation into a scalable, patient-facing resource that can be deployed even where formal prehab clinics do not exist.

The book outlines:

• The evidence linking prehabilitation to improved surgical outcomes

• Practical nutritional strategies to reduce sarcopenia and immune dysfunction

• Structured, low-cost exercise programs suitable for older and high-risk patients

• Proven approaches to reducing anxiety, smoking, and alcohol use pre-operatively

For hospitals and payers, the objective is aligned: fewer complications, fewer readmissions, and better value-based outcomes.

This book was written for patients—but designed to support systems struggling to operationalize prehabilitation at scale.
